Your Michael Jackson ignorance sounds a lot like something that happened to a friend of mine who was in the Peace Corps in Botswana during Grunge. When he got back, there'd be a special on TV about Kurt Cobain, and he'd say, "Hey wait, that guy is famous, right?"

Thanks for your post - it's rare to read about Americans in Africa! I have spent 9 years in Africa (two years with Peace Corps in Cameroon and then seven years with an international organization in four countries) and married a Moroccan so it's a treat to read of others' experiences.
