I am not usually about mocking people on this blog or tearing people down , but this is unbelievable. I read it three times with my mouth agape. This has been sufficiently mocked at Pandagon and Lawyers, Guns and Money so I am not going to pile on too much. I just love the absolutely unreflecting egotism of this guy's piece and his absolute inability to consider the situations he describes from any point of view but his own.
Ugh. I'm rendered speechless, for a change.

Yikes... is that even for real?

My boyfriend's sister had her baby last week, and the new dad decided that he was "wasting too much time" in the hospital, so he went to Home Depot. As the women of the family sat around discussing how rude and insensitive he was, ol' Grandpa cut in with "Well, I think it's only natural that men don't want to hang around babies. That's just how it is. They're not interested. It's always been that way."

It has crossed my mind that it's a joke . . . but it looks pretty real.

The last paragraph of the piece admits he was a jerk (okay, he says "immature", but we pretty much get the idea). So now what? ... Feminist America is shocked that someone was at one time incredibly immature and acted like it? Oh My God! Unbelievable!!! I mean, it must be some sick joke!
(yeah, I'm feeling energized today ;)

This goes past "immature," right through "insensitive" "unfeeling" and "cruel," and approaches "borderline-retarded."

I am not trying to pick on sara, but it bothers me when people use the word "retarded" as an insult. I would encourage people to think about the message that the send when they allow that word to be used as an insult.

Will, I agree--the guy who wrote the article in question is one sick fuck, but "retarded" isn't a synonym for that, and to use it that way is just as wrong as saying "that's so gay."

I don't claim to speak for Feminist America, any more than I would claim that this asshat represents all men. And I'm not really shocked that this guy was incredibly immature, to say the least. What I'm shocked at is the complete lack of introspection and the apparent inability to see that he is making himself sound like a complete jerk. Sure, he gives lip service to having been immature, but he doesn't really take responsibility. He seems to assume that all expectant fathers would be disappointed with a girl, that HE was the one who went through a trauma in the delivery room, and that "it shouldn't always be the baby first," which is pretty funny considering that he never put the baby first.

You think? I don't know. If I tell a story about myself, and at the end of it I say something like, "I was so immature back then," isn't that the same as saying I recognize that I was a jerk and I that I should not have behaved like that? I sort of think so.
