I have a colleague who spent a couple years at sea with her husband. She says she's one of the few who WILL be able to say she wishes she spent more time in the office.

Not me! Granted, I'm not doing the work I love like you are, but hopefully the job that I love would not be in an office. 11 years in offices is quite enough.

Once again, you are making me glad I didn`t go to law school. :)

"The specter of ending my life feeling that I didn't work hard enough scares me more than anything I can imagine."

This statement absolutely perplexes me. I'm 100% anal retentive, highly driven, and a perfectionist. Doing things well is very important to me. And, being a "lawyer" is a huge part of my identity. It was very hard for me to give that aspect of my identity up when I left the field for a few years.

That being said, it's just a *job*. And, if you were to stop working today, someone else would take over your job, life and work would go on, and, within one month, it would pretty much seem as if you'd never even been there.

It's your family, your health and your relationships with others that really matter. At least, in my humble opinion, that's the case...;)

There's a woman at my job who was recently diagnosed with cancer - I believe it's colon cancer. She has been told by the doctors that she has 3-6 months to live. She is in her late 40s, early 50s. She is still at work. She comes in to the office every day and works a full day. I don't know what her family situation is like (maybe the rest of her family has to work, too, so she figures she might as well get out of the house, or maybe she has no family?), but I was really surprised about this.

I'm not sure WHAT I'd do with myself if given three months to live, but going in to the office every day is not high on my priority list. I guess people are just different!
