I think you did intend that pun, and I'm calling you out on it. As for your question, it's best to think of Green Day as a safe American version of the Buzzcocks, with more power chords and sing-alongs and less dissonance.

I think it's hilarious that Green Day are pegged as a "teenager band".... just keep reminding yourself that all the people who are actually IN Green Day are your age. And they've been quite famous since the current teenagers were in kindergarten. So really, you have more right to laugh at them than anything else, just like my mom laughs at me when she catches me listening to 70s stuff.

Heh, my 11-year-old son idolizes Green Day; he wants to be Tre Cool when he grows up (musically, at least). Here in Brooklyn, "American Idiot" is practically an anthem.
